To many, the Tao Te Ching is one of the most important spiritual/philosophical books ever written. The legendary music producer, Rick Rubin calls it "a magic book." It’s also the most recommended book on the ultra-popular Tim Ferriss podcast.
I’ve personally read and studied MANY translations of the book and here I am, still an idiot. In my opinion, the best straightforward translation is the Stephen Mitchell version. The best creative exploration of the book is Wayne Dyer’s “Change Your Thoughts, Change Your Life: Living the Wisdom of the Tao.” My book pales in comparison to the works of these two masters, but it was absolutely inspired by their genius. Thank you, gentlemen. Thank you, Tao.
What is my version of the Tao Te Ching? Well, using Wayne Dyer’s actions as a guide, I decided to read one chapter of the Tao Te Ching (usually Stephen’s book) every night before I went to bed. Then when I woke up in the morning, I would re-read the chapter and then meditate on it for 20 minutes using a binaural beat. For the rest of the day, I would try my best to live my life in line with the wisdom that I had read. At night, before going to bed, I would do some more contemplation and reading (usually Wayne’s book, Jane English/Gia Fu-Feng’s book, Taoistic.com or more than likely a combo of all three). After I finished contemplating, I would then create an Instagram post that I’d upload to my account @phil_stolaronek.
This book is a consolidation of my posts. Is it good? Probably not, but it is authentic, it’s real and in my opinion, it’s a fit for today’s society’s bite-sized attention spans. For Christmas sake, I paired it down to 81 Instagram posts; How much easier could I have made it? The original author of the book, Lao Tzu, is probably rolling over in his grave right now. “Easy LT, easy.”
Anyhow, if you want the most straightforward translation, buy Stephen Mitchell’s book. If you want the best creative exploration, buy Wayne Dyer’s book. If you want the easy-peasy-lemon-squeezy version, which includes pictures (who doesn’t like pictures?),buy my book. Or perhaps, indulge yourself and buy all three. However, if you’re only going to buy one, I’d recommend buying Wayne’s book. How’s that for a sales pitch? I’m telling you to buy another author’s book. I told you I was an idiot. Anyhow, thank you for reading this description. Have a great dream!
