The ‘Constant Bear’ was an exercise taught by Cheng Man-Ching to his students in Taiwan and, after his emigration in 1964, the United States. A search on the Internet will reveal a number of videos of this exercise, some illustrating different and seemingly contradictory way of practicing. This is natural and understandable. T‘ai chi exercises are profound and contain many elements and are practiced in a variety of ways to emphasis different aspects.
My teacher Alan Peck studied intensively with Dr Chi Chiang-Tao in Vancouver in 1986. He had been introduced to Dr Chi previously by his teacher John Kells, who brought Dr Chi to London in circa 1976 after a period of study with T.T. Liang and Dr Chi in Taiwan. Dr Chi was a student of Cheng Man-Ching. Between 1955 and 1988 Dr Chi taught T’ai Chi Chu’an and T’ai Chi sword extensively and was vice president of the Taiwan T’ai Chi Chu’an association and chief instructor prior to his emigration to Vancouver, Canada in 1980.
According to Alan, ‘The Constant Bear Classic’, which he called simply ‘The Bear Classic’, was taught by Cheng Man-Ching to his Taiwanese students as a special departing gift, prior to his emigration to the United States.
For me, the most interesting aspect of this particular practice of the Constant Bear is the understanding that follows on the process of developing the “three internal harmonies”, that is the integration of spirit (shen) with intent (yi),intent with chi, and chi with the body (jing).
These notes, which contain embedded video clips describing the exercise, are shared for those who have some experience of practicing t’ai chi, and may be similarly fascinated by this aspect of the precious art.
